The project deals with the largest public space in the neighborhood, a plaza drawn on the trace of Tàrrega St.’s gardened widening. The building, taking advantage of the reversible character of its floor plan, moves the two staircases volume to the western edge of the complex, thus allowing the central corridor of the house to turn and, in this way, open the terraces to the plaza and the city.
The proposed typology is based on the “Casas Baratas” – Cheap Houses – of the Bon Pastor neighborhood, a group of houses organized in three consecutive spans originated from the room-kitchen-patio sequence. The building’s lack of depth allows us to rethink the scheme in current terms by placing the living room, the dining room and the kitchen in the center of the house in a continuous spatial sequence that enjoys double orientation and opens itself to the exterior through generous terraces-patio. The construction of these outdoor spaces is especially relevant in defining the environmental quality of the home since they offer the possibility of living in contact with the exterior, reproduce the individual and protected nature of the original patios and act as a filter and climatic protection.
